Her name is Ami Sato. She is an incredibly beautiful and highly intelligent medical student. She thinks she can cheat in an examination and get away with it.

His name is Simon Drake. He is a young assistant professor of numismatics in a Canadian university. After he meets Ami, he is handed a series of riddles that lead him to the ancient cities of Argolis. He thinks he is playing the hunter in a romantic version of hide and seek for two.

Unfortunately, things are not what they seem. When five ancient coins mysteriously disappear, a number of other people come to play as well. People like an expert forger, a private secretary, a Russian oligarch and counter-intelligence agents.

The game now being played is called the survival of the fittest. The only part available to Drake is that of the bait. The new players use all means and observe no rules. They think they are the hunters. But above them flies the master of the hunt – an aggressive bird of prey with bloody claws and a carnivorous beak.
